TL;DR: Which speed test server should I use? We suggest the Speedtest.net app or the Speedtest.co.za browser-based test. Read our guide about cabled speed tests.
⚠️ Pro Tips #
- Always disable VPN services before doing speed tests.
- Always check that the speed test service identifies your ISP as Atomic and shows an Atomic IP address.
- If you see high latency when testing, or high ‘latency under load’ – test in the same room as your wifi router, or do a cabled test.
🐢 What not to use #
Don’t type ‘speed test’ into Google and use that test.
Don’t use a browser-based test if you have a fast line – rather use the Speedtest.net app, 500Mbps+
🏎️ Speedtest.co.za #
Speedtest.co.za is operated by MyBroadband and hosted at Teraco on a 10Gbps port. Please leave us a 5-star rating after you test – MyBroadband uses this data to write articles about the ISP industry.
🏎️ Speedtest.net – Ookla #
Atomic hosts a Speedtest.net server in Cape Town, Teraco CT1. It’s available on a 10Gbps port and it has IPv6 enabled.
Note: because it has IPv6 enabled, we have seen cases where customers see faster speeds to other servers in Cape Town without IPv6 enabled. This is because some routers have IPv4 routing acceleration features, but IPv6 is routed with CPU (slower).
🏎️ Wifiman – UI.com #
Atomic hosts a Wifiman speed test server in Cape Town, Teraco CT1. It’s available on a 10Gbps port. We currently limit access to Atomic IP addresses only because UI.com / Unifi / EdgeRouters often have automated testing enabled, which can generate large volumes of unnecessary traffic. You can use this service from the Wifiman mobile app or if your router has this feature.
🏎️ Cloudflare #
Speed.cloudflare.com is good for testing buffer bloat / latency under load.
🏎️ Fast.com #
Fast.com is good for testing Netflix speeds. Click the ‘show more info’ button – it will also show you if you have IPv6 enabled and you can see which primary and secondary Netflix cache you are using.
