Openserve 1Gbps Home Fibre is Now Available!

The most common request weโ€™ve heard from Openserve customers over the years has been “When can I get 1Gbps on my Openserve fibre line?โ€

Until now, the fastest standard Openserve Home Fibre package topped out at 500/250Mbps, while other fibre networks had already introduced gigabit (or even multi-gigabit) residential fibre services. Openserve had previously launched its Fibre-to-the-Room (FTTR) solution that offered up to 1Gbps speeds, which was designed as a premium managed home networking service rather than a simple speed upgrade. A 24-month contract, Huawei fibre gateway, and fibre-connected mesh units, along with a managed platform, meant it wasnโ€™t the right fit for everyone. Many customers simply wanted a straightforward gigabit internet package that would let them continue using the networking equipment they already owned.

And now itโ€™s here.

The new Openserve 1000/500Mbps Home Fibre product is a standard residential fibre package, so you can upgrade your internet speed without replacing your entire home network or moving to a managed WiFi platform.

How can you get 1Gbps Openserve Fibre?

The new 1000/500Mbps package forms part of Openserveโ€™s residential Fibre product range. This means it is currently available on our Openserve Home Fibre products and is not currently available on our Openserve Business Fibre products.

The rollout is currently limited to areas where Openserveโ€™s network has sufficient capacity to deliver the service, which includes most areas Atomic currently offers Openserve Home Fibre. Our team can quickly check whether your area is 1Gbps-ready.

If your area hasnโ€™t been enabled for 1Gbps Openserve Fibre, that doesnโ€™t necessarily mean it wonโ€™t become available in the future as the rollout expands.

Do you need a new router?

While the upgrade means no new Fibre Hardware is required, upgrading to gigabit fibre doesnโ€™t automatically mean that every device in your home will instantly see speeds close to 1Gbps.

This table outlines a general guide to WiFi versions and typical WiFi speeds:

TechnologyTypical real-world speedsGood for 1Gbps?
Wi-Fi 5 (2.4GHz)20โ€“60MbpsโŒ
Wi-Fi 5 (5GHz)Up to ~260MbpsโŒ
Wi-Fi 6 (5GHz)400โ€“800Mbpsโœ…
Wi-Fi 6E (6GHz)700โ€“950Mbpsโญ๏ธ
Wi-Fi 7800Mbps+โญ๏ธ

If youโ€™re hoping to experience speeds close to 1Gbps over WiFi, youโ€™ll generally want a modern WiFi 6 router or newer.

Already have a great home network?

One of the biggest advantages of this new product is that if youโ€™ve already invested in quality networking equipment, you donโ€™t need to start again. Just upgrade the fibre package and use the equipment youโ€™ve already got.
